ÚNICO RED
Conceito Único philosophy is to isolate a well-determined parcel of a very old vineyard, with more than 100 years old. The demand of the winemaking team, leaded by Rita Marques, is not enough. They must understand these grapes of exceptional quality are not needed to ensure Conceito red’s profile. Thus, this wine, that got instant cult status in the market, can only be made in truly extraordinary years. It has a light profile, fragrant aroma and a magnificent texture, Conceito Único Red opened up a new frontier on what can be expected from a red wine from the Douro Valley. It shines and pairs with oven roast kid and little potatoes.

ÚNICO WHITE

Conceito Único white is made from a specific parcel of a very old vineyard, with more than 100 years old. It’s the new Conceito’s iconic wine and is only made in exceptional years. But that is not enough. It’s necessary that the winemaking team, leaded by Rita Marques, understands these grapes are neither necessary, nor reduce, nor even cause a minimal change in Conceito white’s profile. This is an extraordinary rare wine, with an incredible precision and definition and an expected longevity of 25 years or more. It immediately got established in the market as a cult wine. Recommend pairing with delicate fishes, in haute cuisine dishes.

TINTO

Conceito Tinto is made every year, since 2005. Fermented in stainless steel vats, is made with an array of grape varieties from very old vineyards. It defines as a classical Douro, of great seduction, a lot of precision in aromatics, a unique natural freshness, silky texture, great balance and restrained sumptuousness. It ages extremely well for at least 15 years. Pairs perfectly with oven roasts and noble meat cuts.

Conceito White is made every year, since 2006. Fermented in used French oak barrels, is made from the best grapes from very old vineyards. It’s a rich and concentrated wine, but with incredible seduction and subtlety. It ages in bottle for at least 10 years and it pairs perfectly with delicate cooking fish and seafood dishes.

CONCEITO
BASTARDO
It’s made from family vineyards, planted about 50 years ago. The variety Bastardo ripens very early, in fact, much earlier than any other red variety. It was decided to vinify it in “lagar”, by foot treading and the use of native yeasts. Made since 2007, today it simply ages in stainless steel vats. From the first moment, Bastardo was a wine of passions, since its colour tricks a distracted eye, which gets surprised by a spicy aroma, and a round, glycerine mouth, which makes it a real pleasure at the table. This wine ages very slowly in bottle, almost showing no change over the years. Very versatile at the table, it pairs perfectly with Asian food and tomato based dishes.
LEGÍTIMO
TINTO
In parallel to Bastardo, Legítimo offers an alternative to the vast clientele that was disappointed every year with the early sell out of a wine that gained faithful followers over time. Legítimo uses the traditional varieties from the Douro but looks for the same seductive appeal of the Bastardo, a spicy lightness that make it soft, fresh and desirable. Made with minimal intervention, it looks for a natural style, stripped-down and straightforward, it’s Conceito’s new bet for 2018.

SPARKLING BRUT NATURE

 

Made with Austrian grape variety Grüner Veltliner grown in Douro granite soils, this white cannot the be a Douro DOC, instead it bears the IVV (Institute of the Vineyard and the Wine) stamp. Made for the first time in 2012 harvest, it is fermented in used French oak barrels. Follows the traditional sparkling and ageing method, over several months, in bottle, in a very cold and constant temperature cellar. It is a rich sparkling, full of brioche and pain grillé nuances, combined with the variety’s exciting spice. Fine and firm bubble. Generous natural sugar, which balances with the extreme dryness, to privilege the grape’s characteristics. This sparkling may well be enjoyed alone or with a variety of dishes.
VINHOS VERDES
CONCEITO

ALVARINHO BRANCO

Made since 2010 with carefully selected grapes in its origin, the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço, and it’s vinified in stainless steel vats. There is no use of oak, to show the grape’s characteristics in this wonderful terroir. It’s a rich and powerful wine, with the usual subtleness and sophistication of Conceito’s range. It ages well in bottle over 10 or more years. Pairs with grilled fishes and vegetarian dishes.

CONCEITO

ZA TINTO

After the earthy richness of the Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot from Breedekloof in 2011, Conceito South Africa is, since 2015, a fresh and exuberant red, that speaks of the red earth and old vines from Swartland. The extreme precision of vinification in concrete vats, ageing in used French oak barrels, carries a soft delicacy, well supported by rigorous maturation and an immediate seduction. A red wine to pair with grilled meats. It will age wonderfully over many years.

VINTAGE

Vale da Teja’s terroir provides grapes with excellent acidity and balance, thanks to its soils, altitude and the ensemble of grape varieties. Great Tawny Ports traditionally come from this terroir. It was, thus, a huge surprise when Conceito certified the first Vintage Port, from the 2005 harvest. The wine presented an impeccable structure, colour and concentration, offering a mature full mouth, yet, with the fantastic acidity offered by this terroir. In the classical 2007 year, the Vintage Port achieved even more elegance and complexity. Conceito’s Vintage Ports reflect the house philosophy – rigorous and careful winemaking. Over a decade has gone by and the wines are ageing as great Vintages do – complex and subtle – pleasure wines from the first moment and no commitment to its longevity. Pairs perfectly with chocolate or apple desserts as well as dried fruits or full-fat cheeses.

LBV

Conceito Late Bottled Vintage is made, tout cour, as if it were a Vintage Port and it delivers the freshness, balance and depth of the house’s Port wines. The additional two years of ageing, before bottling, make the wine accessible earlier, round down the tannins and increase complexity. Conceito LBV is a wine of pleasure, which can be drank on its own; pair with a bold steak au poivre or chocolate and apple desserts, dried fruits or cheeses. It’s not a coincidence that packaging is the same as Conceito Vintage. According to Conceito’s winemakers, this LBV is a first class Port, an icon that will get better in bottle for many years to come.

TAWNY 10 ANOS

Conceito 10 yo Tawny bridges the experience of two generations managing the house. A base of great Tawnies made during José da Costa Ferreira and his brother Luís da Costa Ferreira, was aged at length in concrete vats (interestingly enough, this technique is once again first line of modern winemaking). Great-niece Rita Marques brought along a new understanding to these wines. The blend developed slowly, bringing a new richness and freshness, refining the base that is bottled today as a modern Tawny, with shine and lightness, depth, complexity and pleasure. Pairs perfectly with hard cheeses or the traditional eggs and sugar based desserts.

A common understanding of the wines and how to make them joined to a solid friendship. Rita Marques and Ricardo Freitas, from Barbeito wines, shared a passion for Madeira wines. Faced with the challenge, Ricardo came to the Douro during the 2014 harvest. Together, Rita and Ricardo, looked for the right varieties in the best vineyards, aligned ideas and established the styles to look for. The first result of this partnership was an innovative White Port, a kind of “White Vintage Port”, something that regulation does not foresee. Thus, each year, the batch number identifies the vintage – Batch n. 1 is from 2014. Next they created a Ruby Port, a light wine, fresh, fragrant, yet not undermining its longevity. More news to come, but those need more time.

The Ruby Port is planned as a Vintage, looking at the old vineyards and the grape varieties’ blend a profile that doesn’t focus exclusively on the structure of tannins, rather, aiming at a balance between firm but flexible tannins, the refreshing acidity and a rich and abundant fruit. This is a light, fresh and fragrant wine, without compromising longevity. It may be enjoyed now or improved in the cellar for long years. It may be drunk solo or paired with elegant chocolate or caramel desserts.

This is an innovative White Port. A kind of “White Vintage Port”, something that regulation doesn’t consider, thus, each year it’s identified by its Blend/Batch number. Blend/Batch 1 refers to the 2014 vintage. Made with grapes from very old vineyards, it’s foot tread in stone “lagar” (tank) and it’s bottled after a short ageing period. It’s a concentrated and intense wine, but with a surprising balance and lightness, that make it extremely suited for the end of a meal, served cold, solo or paired with traditional egg and almond desserts or fruits.
